Holding to ethical business values in a struggling economy

As a small business owner in the current economy, I find that it is as imperative as ever to not be tempted with short cuts or compromise in any way a commitment to ethical business values. A struggling economy is actually a good place to put these values to work. When the dust settles, these values will stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

I own a Portland web design company and am expanding into the Los Angeles web design and Seattle web design markets. No matter what market I am working in, there are core values that must be built into the foundation and structure of any business strategy.

From Good to Great by Jim Collins – A Must Read for anyone in business

A great book I am currently reading is “From Good to Great” by Jim Collins. In the book, Collins researches over 1400 companies to discover why some companies go from good to great, while others either stay good or wallow in mediocrity. I am finding some extremely valuable principles that apply directly to my own efforts in building my web design company.

I am a Portland web designer currently expanding my business into the Seattle Web Design and Los Angeles web design markets, and need to make sure I am laying down the proper foundation right from the beginning. From Good to Great is helping me to identify those core principles.

Welcome to Solid Business. This is blog about common sense business principles. I will be blogging about articles and other blogs I find valuable and passing those on to you. I will also be sharing lessons I have learned about building a business. Things to do and not to do. And be assured I am still learning.

I am a Portland web designer and love it in many ways. I have made a lot of mistakes especially at the beginning when I didn’t know how to set up a business. Much of the lessons came through trial and error. I will share my mistakes in the hope of helping others to not make the same ones. I’ve heard it said it is important to learn from our mistakes, but it is even better to learn from other’s mistakes. I hope you can learn from mine.

I like to read books on business when I have the time, which isn’t much lately, but when I do, I will be giving reports here about what I’ve read and what I find valuable.

I also want to blog about the character traits that it takes to build and run a successful business. Building a strong and enduring business is not only about doing the right things. It’s also about being the right person.
